Peterboro Community Garden in Bloom
Members of The Inner City Clubhouse and residents of Peterboro Place joined the Garden Resource Program (GRP) to plant two raised vegetable beds, an herb garden, revitalize three beds and ring a flower garden with bricks and stone found in the lot. The garden is located between the award-winning historical building project, now housing PharMor Pharmacy, and residential homes in the Peterboro-Charlotte Historical District on Peterboro Street, across the street from DCC.
By joining the Greening of Detroit, attending workshops and donating volunteer time, most of the seeds, plants, beds, stakes, wood chips and compost were free – DCC volunteers provided the labor to plant, water and cultivate the crops. A $1,000 grant from The Home Depot will be utilized to purchase items such as tools, signage, fencing and perennials for years to come.
Now, one month later, there are onions, potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, herbs, bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, flowers and watermelon growing, and we already had a salad buffet from our harvested greens.
The Inner City Clubhouse program of DCC provides activities in a safe environment designed to improve the member’s ability to become self-reliant, self supportive and productive by enhancing social, employment and literacy skills.
