Run for Literacy raised over $21,000 for adult literacy

DCC’s 5K RUN FOR LITERACY was held  APRIL 27, 2014 at the Detroit RiverWalk and raised over $21,000 to employ certified peer tutors to enhance reading, writing, math and computer skills of Detroit adults. Nearly 250 runners and walkers registered for the 3rd annual event.

This year’s race again showcased the beautiful Detroit RiverWalk and Dequindre Cut Greenway. Channel 7 News Reporter was the event host and welcomed the crowd during the opening ceremony. Kids of all ages competed in their own events and at the sound of the starting gun, Board member and veteran Dennis Leppek led the runners on his bike.

The goal of Run for Literacy is to continue to raise awareness of the growing demand for mental health services and the stigma that keeps people from seeking help. In conjunction with the opening of Detroit Central City Health Center, it is also an effort for greater awareness linking physical well being with mental well being, as obesity is a problem in all age brackets nationwide. Proceeds from the run will help fund the Literacy Program, which provides an opportunity for adults residing in Wayne County to increase their skills, competencies and confidence, leading toward independence. Beginning this year, all GED tests will be computerized making the demand for tutors and computer coaches even more important.
